Zygmunt William Birnbaum papers, 1920-2000.

Consists largely of correspondence documenting Birnbaum's efforts to rescue his family from Poland during the Nazi occupation, family letters concerning the fate of relatives in Poland and Germany, and other World War II correspondence with friends and colleagues. Also includes subject files on Birnbaum's mathematical research projects and involvement in the Loyalty Oath suit, diaries and writings, papers documenting his service in such professional organizations as the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a small group of papers of his wife, Hilde Merzbach Birnbaum.

Zygmunt William Birnbaum was born in Lwoʹw, Austria-Hungary, in 1903. After obtaining a law degree in 1925 and a Ph. D. in mathematics in 1929, both from the University of Lwoʹw, Birnbaum pursued postdoctural studies at the University of Göttingen in Germany, 1929-1931.
